TGABJIF (Thank God-Allah-Buddha-Jehovah It’s Friday!)
Today’s “Five for Friday” is brought to you by a lack of sleep and a headache that’s been bothering me for two days.
1. Sewing Love
This one is dedicated to sewing. My true love for it began the day Carla showed me how to thread my machine, and I made my first wobbly stitch. Huge thanks to Facebook Marketplace’s algorithm for showing me the post that offered a free sewing machine, and to Peloton for giving me the dexterity to be the first to message the seller and claim it!
On a serious note, I’ve always wanted to learn to sew—ever since I saw a Vera Bradley bag—but I was intimidated. Pinning, patterns, cutting, measuring?! It all felt so mysterious. But now, I’m unlocking that mystery one stitch at a time. With practice and lots of measuring, I’m starting to make the kinds of beautiful items I’ve always admired in magazines.
Sadly, all this sewing means that…
2. Knitting Has Been Neglected
For now, my knitting supplies are gathering dust. Sewing has captured my interest, and I’ve been scrolling through local sewing classes and looking at patterns and fabrics. I still carry yarn with me when I go out, but my evenings are mostly spent reading or sewing. My colleagues at work are in for a treat—they’ll all be getting pear pouches, bookmarks, or whatever else I manage to create between now and December.
My current sewing setup isn’t ideal, which has led me to think about…
3. Home Organization (Again)
My home is always in a state of flux. I want a cleaner, more organized space, but clutter keeps creeping in, and I create workarounds. With cooler weather on the way, I’m craving coziness. I picture myself sewing while the house fills with the aroma of bubbling soup or fresh bread. This vision makes me want to toss all the unnecessary stuff and finally create the space I’ve dreamed of since we moved.
4. Running Woes
I think I’ve fallen out of love (or at least like) with running. This is the first time I’m sharing it publicly, though The Librarian has heard me mutter about it for months. I’m still processing this feeling and will probably write more later. For now, I’ve been sleeping in and sticking to home workouts.
5. Nail Care Success
I painted my nails this week! Normally, that wouldn’t be a big deal, but after weeks of just doing the bare minimum in self-care, taking a few moments to pick a color and paint my nails felt like a real victory.
That’s it for this week’s “Five for Friday”! It’s been a bit scattered (thanks to the headache), but between embracing sewing, shifting from knitting to sewing, stepping away from running, and focusing on self-care—it’s been a hell of a week.
