100 Minutes a Day

Look Better Naked, Say it Rah-shay By Oct 03, 2024 No Comments

Last month my grandmother would have been 100 years old and to honor her memory, I tried to do 100 minutes of exercise per day for the month. In the past I would run the number of miles she was celebrating but as running and Rachee are on a break, I decided moving something would be a wonderful way to honor her.

Foolish me. It’s been some time since I have actively made a plan to workout. Sure, I do weekly runs with my group and have been participating in challenges through some online groups but to make an intentional plan to move with purpose was somehow different. 100 minutes is an hour and forty minutes and, while there technically are enough hours in the day to workout, making the time to get that 100 minutes a day took planning and discipline, and here is how it went.

How it went

Having a plan is crucial. The days that I didn’t make working out a priority, I found myself scrambling to make my goal late at night, Or when I was short in time, I was not working out my whole body. This resulted in me reaching my goal in only 18 of the 30 days. The beginning of the month was easy peasy. I had two races and made a point to get out with my run group. One of the online groups was doing a yoga challenge and participating in that challenge was further encouragement to move. However, as the month went on, I fell off. I was exhausted! It’s been some time since I have done more than 20 minutes of a workout and I felt it. I was tiiired and sore, like long run sore without stretching sore, and my body decided that I should take a couple of days off to get back into the groove.

The days that I worked out felt like pre-transplant times. Getting my workout before work helped set the tone for the day. I poured into myself before doing all the things for everyone else. I was not snacking as much and it was easier to get my water in.

Moving forward

For October, since I am turning 51 years old, I have decided to keep up the activity with 51 minutes of exercise a day. After 100 daily  minutes, 51 daily minutes feels positively decadent and a bit more doable.

I like working out in the morning so that it’s done and I don’t have that lingering feeling of having to workout over my head. This means that I am getting to bed at a decent hour and able to get up and get moving. Planning workouts means that I am working different body parts evenly and am doing a combination of moves. I use the activity guide from Peloton to make sure I am evenly working each body part because I want strong everything.

This month’s online challenge is calling for foam rolling (a kind of stretching) that I need! Also, I have a two fall races that I want to complete and I have a goal to complete them in under 40 minutes.

Two days in and I am feeling pretty hopeful. The shorter time working out feels possible and I like reaching my goal.

Late this month I will share some of my favorite Peloton classes and workouts and highlights from the races. Until then, tell me…what are you October goals?
