#MondayListicle: It’s the Little Things

Say it Rah-shay By Feb 24, 2014 23 Comments

Today was the first Monday since January that I have been at the library for my Preschool Playschool Program. During January I had someone else cover the program and then there was the library conference that I scuttled off to attend. February seemed to be all about two-hour delays, black ice, holidays. Really, Mondays are hard for me. The program that I run was created by parents whose children have since started elementary school or the families have moved on, literally to another area. Attendance can be spotty and for a while *I* was flaky with the time. I would schedule the start at 10:30 but all of the parents would arrive at 10. I would do my thing but inevitably someone would come at 10:30 expecting the complete program. I would be a bit perturbed but couldn’t really be mad at people who were following directions I had created! Each week I question WHY I have a Monday program and contemplate ending what feels not like Hell but perhaps third levelish.

Sunday I came up with a good idea for programming (award-winning books) and as I set up I wondered if anyone were going to come, if I should just cancel or was I being silly. Today I was day that my morning program started without a snow delay, a closing due to some crazy weather or a holiday. Mondays are hard for me. It feels like my weekends are so short, what with working Sundays, and then I have gotten really lax with planning ahead. Also my program has varying degrees of attendance and it’s hard a bit hard for me to energize two preschoolers who would rather play in the kitchen.

I was once again going through an existentialist crisis of library programming when a few of my preschoolers and their families let me know just how much Mondays mean to them and that I should stop worrying.

Ways to know that thing is THAT THING

  1. The running bear hug when G saw me today.
  2. The excited chatter from J as he described a Lego book to me.
  3. The squeal when I found a new to J book with Lego characters who are also police
  4. Being shown the space where the tooth was lost
  5. The whispered, “You have the best stories!”
  6. A grandmother thanking me for having a place where she can bring her granddaughters.
  7. A caregiver telling me that I make her week start well. She also said something about me being all that and then proceeded to tell me why she doesn’t visit other libraries.
  8. A kid bawling when it was time to leave the library

Viva Monday!
What little things are showing you some love this week OR how are YOU showing love (which was really the prompt but my vanity and narcissistic tendencies were HIGH today).

That is so nice that you able to observe all of these positive responses from the kids as well as some adults! I heard from my son’s teacher yesterday that he had a great day at school. He was very focused and on task. That made me feel great too!

I need to get to our library more often. Once a week I let my wilds pick out books for the whole week. We haven’t done any of the programs yet.

It’s wonderful to see a great program at a library! We used to attend a few when my son was younger, but now our schedule doesn’t allow us to go. We always had a blast – it looks like “your” kids are enjoying themselves, too!
