Philadephia Science Festival kicked off Friday nights with events around the city of Philadelphia and Dill, The Bee, Pop, my BIL and I were able to take part in a CSI event thanks to the Educational Advancement Alliance at the Enterprise Center in West Philadelphia.
When we arrived we were greeted by a busy but friendly staff. They signed up is while we jammed to jaunty jazz tunes. The Mardi Gras court then showered us with beads after we shouted, “I LOVE SCIENCE!” While waiting for everyone to be checked in, supplies were available to decorate masks and hats which were provided in the swag bags. The Bee and Pop took this task to heart making glittery and bejeweled masks.
The invitations read that light refreshments would be served. Well, there was a full meal! Red beans and rice…chicken…po’ boy sandwiches! Yum! The staff were gracious and encouraged us to eat as much as we wanted (and let me tell you, I did!).
The parade began and the Mardi Gras Court danced their way into the room. There were horns blowing, people shouting and cheering as the play began. The interactive show was a delight. Everyone was in character, enjoyed their roles and encouraged the audience to join in. As we solved the crime of who stole the Missing Spirit stick, the children (and a few adults including me!) learned about blood typing, fingerprints and had a entertaining evening making science fun.
Dill and The Bee were so excited about the event! Especially Dill. He took lots of time to think, rethink and examine ALL of the evidence, work out his theories and was his hand shot up and waved furiously each time a volunteer was requested. Eventually the audience worked out the answer and there was a raffle of science themed prizes. This was such a positive event! As we left we chatted with other familes who expressed joy at coming out and taking part of the program.
The Philadelphia Science Fair continues for another 12 days. Visit the schedule of events for activities made to engage and introduce everyone to the wonders of science.
