Magic Mike XXL

Let’s be frank…Magic Mike XXL ain’t winning no film awards. I mean unless there is an award for best hip gyrating which I admit I may have missed because the Oscars is a really long ceremony and I never am able to watch it from start to finish. Any who, what you need to know is that Magic Mike XXL is all about beautiful men moving their beautiful bodies in ways that doesn’t seem physically possible and having a ball while doing it.

Say it with Magic. #MagicMikeXXL

In this sequel to 2012’s Magic Mike (DVD) title character Mike Lane (Channing Tatum) finds himself drawn back into the world of male exotic dancing, a world he left to pursue his fantasy of selling his furniture creations. A chance reunion with his former dance crew, the Kings of Tampa (minus Dallas and the kid from “I am Number Four”) , makes Mike realize that he really misses that dance life and he heads off to the stripper convention with the crew for one last hurrah.

Stripping is just a day job for the other members of the Kings; this movie shares a bit more about their real dreams (which, spoiler alert, is foreshadowing for their convention winning routines). Tarzan (Kevin Nash) is an artist; Ken (Matt Bomer) is an actor; Tito (Adam Rodriguez) is a chef (specifically, an ice-cream and frozen-yogurt guru; he sells from the truck they travel to the convention in—which Tarzan painted—during the summer); Tobias (Gabriel Iglesias) is a DJ; and Richie (Joe Manganiello) is  a romantic who just wants to find the right woman and get married.

There are some surprises. Jada Pinkett-Smith joins the cast as Rome, a promoter who has a past with Mike. Jada is always good and she does play Boss Lady well. I loved that Jada’s Rome shared the message that women were queens worthy of feeling good about themselves sand taking the shame out of watching fine male dancers.

I did find the movie a bit long; at times I thought the XXL stood for extra extra long but all in all it was a fun girls night out and fun escape for a few hours.

Magic Mike XXL is in theaters now. Purchase your tickets now. Don’t Get sold out!
