In which I channel my inner Grover and a little shameless self-promotion
Wait!
What did that say?
The title of this post. What. Did. That. Say?
Did that say that SUMMER READING IS COMING?
IT Did?
OOOOOH! I am so…
I’m not sure really what I am. Next week starts my library’s Summer Reading Program and I just got a little woozy as I considered what this means. It partly means that for the next nine weeks I am going to be in demand, running programs, logging books, performing if you will for the people of my community. My room will be a mess (messier) in the vain attempt to keep the shelves together (actually the phenomenal library pages have been doing this…thanks!), answering questions about everything, patrolling for dropped off kids, cutting stuff, putting things together and waiting with bated breath as I hope that the something actually looks like the picture. Hoping that I get the turnout and the participation that I plan for yet also worrying (shocker) that I won’t be able to handle the turnout.
Do you hear the violins?
Let me keep it positive. This is going to be a fantastic summer and here are the top ten things that I am looking forward to:
1) Flow Circus (August 4th).
I love Paul Miller. I’ve seen him perform at three showcases and was delighted each time. After taking a class he and his partner Daria offered I was excited that we would be able to have them at the library.
2)The Garrison Carida Star Wars Show (August 6)
Darth Vader and a few Storm Troopers are descending on Lansdowne to help us end the Summer Reading Program. I CANNOT WAIT! I am working on a sweet R2D2 hat to wear to this event and think a marathon viewing of Star Wars is in order.
3) Storytime begins again!
I love storytime. I can pretend to be someone else within the 32 pages of a picture book. Plus I love my families. They are fun, interactive and quite supportive.
Next week we start at home (an excuse so that I can read Mouse Mess by Linnea Riley).
4) Science in the Summer
Despite failing chemistry and having to repeat Biology more times than I care to mention, I love science. Well I can honestly say that I truly admire and respect science folk. Each year we are lucky to host the GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program. SIS is a fun program that entertains, educates and gets young people excited about summer. I so wish that when Pop was younger Buffy and I worked out a way to get her to the classes but alas! Full time working parents, night shift and a new child made the classes seemingly impossible. The Bee and Dill love the class and have been attending for a while. This year we are doing Simple Machines; I think I may just as excited as the students!
5) Stop, Drop and Craft (Tuesdays at 2P)
I have planned a bit more (read I have a plan) this year for the majority of my activities. I have things cut, each week I have a main thing and an alternative and I remembered to KISS everything I do. KISS, in this case is Keep It Simple Stupid. Instead of the most complicated time consuming activities I have decided that I am NOT cheating if I have a make and take, run off paper or something else that is not 35 steps, cringe worthy or so complicated that even older students give up and start coloring pictures of Strawberry Shortcake.
6) Vicky Town!
Yay!
Vicky Town is back in town!
Vicky is a storyteller that is pretty
7) Seeing how much everyone has grown since last summer
There are some people that I only see in the summer and these kids always seem to shoot up like weeds. Voices are deeper, limbs are longer and there are requests for new types of books and materials. Yay! We can finally share The Hunger Games and Yay! They are ready for the next best thing.
8) I get to spend more time with The Bee.
Of course this is done somewhat under duress and with some manipulation. Since Mom is in so much demand as Miss Rachee, The Bee then seems to realize that her mom is somewhat sorta cool and no longer is Mom bad word.
9) Each week is a new adventure.
It really is. Summer can be stressful time consuming, puzzling but there is always something new to explore, something new to be done and its just great.
10) Visiting other libraries!
I love visiting other libraries during summer to steal, er see what hey are doing. I also like being able to take part of their reading programs and seeing what events are scheduled. Plus its nice not to be ‘on’, see what other people are reading and not having to break down the room when the event is over.
What are YOU looking forward to this summer?
