Last week my friend Angela invited me to her storyhour and she had a great program. Music, dancing and a few books. She even did a craft with her group (me, not so ambitious although we may make our own shaker eggs)**.
Because I am a hater always looking for new ideas, I decided that I was going to give it a whirl. A few months ago I tried a musical program and let’s just say that it sucked quarters. After seeing Angela do her thing, I went through my repertoire of sounds to come up with a program that would be fun, had books that I could (loosely) tie in and tracks that I could get my hands on in a week.
Soundtrack for a musical storytime:
Warm-up: Shake Some Sillies IN
Georgiana Stweart: Alphabet Stretch
Kimbo: Shrug Your Shoulders
The Wiggles: Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes (my copy was acting a bit loopy)
Gullah Gullah Island: Head and Shoulders
Peter & Ellen Allard: Baby 1,2,3
r’s note: Yes, I realize we did a lot of shoulder songs; I kept finding songs that I liked and couldn’t decide. Plus I was trying to get them all winded ; )
Barney: Mr. Knickerbocker with hand motion
Kimbo: Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!
Greg and Steve: If I Had a Hammer (snarky note: uh, Greg and Steve? What’s the deal with your mislabeled tracks?)
r’s note: For these songs we used bean bags
Mommy & Me Playground Favorites: A Sailor Went To Sea, Sea, Sea
Raffi: Down by the Bay (I love this song!)
Kimbo: The La Song
I had a few others in reserve that I will pull out for the next program. The kids and their parents all seemed to have a good time and I was more prepared and had fun. However, I think that I will avoid wearing a turtleneck sweater next time!
r’s note: please to note…do not get too caught up in the moment. I did a Matrix type lean back and my sides are killing me.
Twisting the night away,

Also here from Best Posts. I would have no idea where to start with something like this… I’m impressed with your musical shakers.
I realized that I had a typo!
Thanks for visiting Cairo!
It was such a fun day that I think I am going to add music to storytime more often.
Hi Kate,
I got the musical shakers from a friend. She had left over plastic eggs and filled them with beads.
I also google whatever theme I think I am going to do for ideas.

Hey Rachee,
Sounds like so much fun! Noticed you on Ravelry; I’m really enjoying your blog and looking forward to attending storytime with the kids when the weather warms up enough for walking.
