From award winning author illustrator Leigh Hodgkinson, 2011’s Goldilocks and Just One Bear is a twist from the original story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. This time it is BABY BEAR who wanders from his home in the forest and gets lost in the Big City. Looking for a break from the loud noises of the city, Baby Bear discovers a home that seems to be able to provide the food and rest he desires. After some trial and error, he finds food and rest that are just right. The familiar scenario and a face from the past unites Baby Bear and his old pal Goldilocks who is living her happily ever after.
If you enjoy fractured fairy tales, then this story is for you. A delightful twist on the original Goldilocks and the Three Bears finds Baby Bear as the one who enters and destroys.
The text is a mix of traditional print and fun fonts to accent certain words or emotions as Baby Bear experiences them. The art is mixed media, which is a bit busy for me but does hit home Baby Bear’s confusion and nervousness in being in the big city. There are some great references to Fairy Tale themed items including “Wolf’s Clothing Boutique,” “Mr. B. G. Gruff’s Baa Baa Hairdos” and “The Ugly Sisters’ Beauty Parlor”

Other fractured fairytales with a Goldilocks theme:
Deep in the Forest by Brinton Turkle In this clever, wordless turnabout on the Goldilocks story, a curious bear cub wreaks havoc in the cabin of a pioneer family out for a walk. Pencil-and-wash pictures bring the forest and Goldilocks’ family frontier cabin to life, infusing the tale with a satisfying warmth, a sense of love and security, and just the right touch of humor.
Goldie and the Three Hares by Margie Palantini Goldilocks literally falls into the lives of the three hares as she makes her escape from the three bears. The Hare family is happy to help the girl, who has hurt her foot. But as you might imagine, Goldie is not a very good houseguest. She is tough to please, since every chair is too hard, too soft, or otherwise not just right.
