On Hooks and Needles

In which The Bee and I meet Ms. Stitch ‘n Bitch herself Debbie Stoller.

Or I am going to the dark side.

The Free Library of Philadelphia hosts a program called the Author Events. This program has won three “Best of Philly” designations from Philadelphia magazine and according to the Free Library web site hosts more than 125(!) authors each year.  Last night I dragged The Bee along to meet Debbie Stoller, who would be speaking about her new book, Stitch ‘n Bitch Superstar Knitting.

There was a room full of women waiting to check out Debbie and hear what she had to say. As she spoke crocheters and knitters alike worked on projects, shared yarns and oohed and ahhed as Debbie shared her story and samples from her new book.  I met up with an online friend who has been inviting me to join and attend her crochet group since forever as well as some other crafty sisters who make my crochet look like child’s play! The Bee even got into the swing of these, grabbing a hook and working on chains. There was such a positive vibe in the room and the quiet sound of yarn being stitched.

Things I learned last night:
I’m digging Debbie! She was funny and she welcome chicks who hook (aka crocheters).

There is a yarn bombing movement going on in Philadelphia. Personally I’m feeling like this is a waste of yarn but hey, if you like it, I love it. There is a blog about it but I cannot remember the name of it for the life of me!

Today I am going to get a pair of needles and I am going to attempt knitting.

As Debbie signed our books, she asked The Bee if she knits or crochets. A little was her response. When I asked her of my dilemma about feeling like I’m cheating on crochet with knit she laughed a little and encouraged me with this response:
“Knitting and Crocheting are both wonderful and there are some things that look better knitted and some better crocheted. Have fun.”
