Champions are all around us! The Delaware County Literacy Council (DCLC) will celebrate three local “Champions of Adult Literacy” at the first-ever Champions of Adult Literacy Awards Reception and Fundraiser on Thursday, November 14, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Harrah’s Philadelphia Racetrack and Casino in Chester.
Receiving the “Champion of Adult Literacy” award on November 14 will be the Honorable John A. Linder, Mayor of Chester; Philip E. Heron, Executive Editor of the Delaware County Daily Times; and Crossroads Community Church of Upper Darby.
Mayor John A. Linder has been a lifelong advocate of education and of job-training. His support of the Real Men Really Read campaign and of college opportunities for all Chester residents has put him in the forefront of promoting adult literacy.
Philip E. Heron has been an outspoken advocate for adult literacy. “There is no issue closer to a newspaper editor’s heart than literacy,” he wrote in a recent editorial. Heron also has participated in the Real Men Really Read campaign and has encouraged the community forums in the Daily Times to address issues of literacy.
Crossroads Community Church, located at 104 Heather Road in Upper Darby, provides an array of services to assist immigrants in the Upper Darby area. Pastor Tim Witmer has been spearheading the church’s efforts to reach out to immigrants since 1986. Currently the church offers an Immigration Resource Center, coordinated by Pastor William Jarwood, as well as an ESL Sunday School group for adults. The church also hosts several DCLC ESL classes.
