Bonjour! Hola! Nǐ Hǎo! It’s Lango Foreign Languages for Kids!

Say it Rah-shay By Feb 22, 2011 2 Comments

Let me start off by saying that boy oh boy do I love my social media group, Philly Social Media Moms! With the exception of a misunderstanding between one member and myself (yes, I still feel some type of way about that) everyone has been wonderful and welcoming, helpful and supportive and thus disproving the old ‘women can’t work together’ stereotype.
Anywho, I got an invitation through Facebook for an open house for a Lango Open House. The advertising read that sample classes in French, Spanish and Mandarin would be offered and the open house would be a morning of fun including scavenger hunts, obstacle courses and multicultural arts & crafts – all while immersed in a new language with a team of talented native and bilingual teachers.  The Bee had scouts so we weren’t able to attend the whole thing and we arrived to catch the Spanish and the Mandarin. It was cool to meet in person some fabulous online friends! Caitlin, the Lango rep and French teacher is sweet and friendly that I was genuinely sorry to have missed her class. She was very welcoming to The Bee, acknowledging that while she may have been older by the other kids by about six years, she was welcome to help anyone with the Spanish class.

The classes we observed were so much fun! The groups gathered in a circle and the instructor sang a simple welcoming song in Spanish. After the song she broke down each word by repeating it, having the student repeat it and reaffirming it with a game.

The Bee is a bit too old for the classes but I cannot wait to share these classes with my library families.
Yes. I am shamelessly going to steal, uh borrow these ideas for a future storytime and perhaps Caitlin may be a guest at the library…Oui!

The time we spent there was great.
If you can check out a class, give it a play. The families in attendance all seemed happy and to enjoy the classes and they learned without it seeming forced or stress.

Buenos Noches!
