Write a Review Wednesday: Hey Diddle Diddle

r’s note: I am trying something different with this review. Please comment!

The classic nursery rhyme, Hey Diddle Diddle, gets a sweet modern twist in Eve Bunting’s new picture book.Instead of the full rhyme readers are treated to fun variations of Hey Diddle Diddle (Hey Diddle Dum, the Whale plays the Drum).  Mary Ann Fraser’s illustrations brings a menagerie of animals to life as they get their instruments ready for a performance; a performance which takes place in a toddler’s music box.
General Considerations:

This book reads well aloud and will work great with a crowd. All ages will enjoy the rhyming text and will be encouraged to participate and sing. The illustrations are fun and will add to the story.

Extending the story:
Mother Goose/Nursery Rhyme Program
-This book will be excellent to re-introduce nursery rhymes to families. It can be used with the wonderful Mother Goose on  the Loose program or with a separate nursery rhyme program.
-The instruments explored in this book can lead to a discussion and subsequent parade or story time musical ensemble (I can already see it…The Wee Reads Musical Experience).
-Animal signs of course! We can make animal sounds and since the animals are all playing instruments we can explore the sounds the musical instruments will make.

-With an older crew we can make up our own rhymes and illustrations to create our own books.

Any other ideas?
