#TwistedMixTape Tuesday: That’s Not the Original?

So, I totally was off with the prompt for this week’s Twisted Mix Tape Tuesday (my whole week was off but whatevs.)

This week Kerri from Undiagnosed But Okay suggested the prompt. What are your favorite cover songs?

I will admit that I am can be an original artist snob at times. I mean, your jam comes on but something is a little off. You listen for a bit anyways and realize that it’s a little slower, faster, something that is just not making your song not your song.  And then the lyrics begin and it just seems… wrong.

I exaggerate. Cover songs aren’t all bad. Sometimes the remakes are, gasp…better!

Friday

The first time I heard this song was from my sister who saw it on an episode of Tosh.0. This song is pretty bad but Jimmy Fallon actually makes me want to ridicule it less and less.

Creep

This song is creepy enough but sung by the Belgien’s girl choir it’s downright haunting.

Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You

It wasn’t until I saw Jersey Boys that I realized that Lauryn Hill was not THE singer of this song. Her version flows and just sounds oh so right. The Four Seasons’ version is good but Lauryn’s version just does it for me.

I Say A Little Prayer

My sister tells this story: When my niece was younger she was supposed to be saying her prayers before going to bed. Pop clasped her hands together and uttered: The moment I wake up. Before I put on my makeup. I say a little prayer for you.
Bwahahahaha!
I love Dionne Warwick but she always seemed like someone for (at the time) older folks. But Aretha Franklin, honey, she was that stuff!

Baby Got Back

Nothing can replace Sir Mix-a-Lot but this version is so much fun. It got all the funk that Sisqo missed! (Kidding…this is a line from Undercover Brother!). This version is so silly but it’s chill and I like it.

That’s mine!

What are your favorite covers?

Leave me a comment!

I have to agree Jeff Buckley is one of my favorites as well. So many of these are great in their own unique way.

  6. I love getting to add a few new songs to my play list. This is the only way I find new music – I never listen to the radio as I am always with my little one and do not want him hearing some of the music out there today!

  7. Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You is one of my favorite songs! Great list, I can’t wait for more.

  8. Can’t take my eyes off of you – such a classic – love it!

  9. I not much for a play list. But if I had to pick one I like it would be Frankie Valli Can't take my eyes off you!

Some good choices here. I really do not have a personal fave I can think of right now (Kim)

  16. That Friday video by Rebecca Black was a bit weird even weirder was the cover of it lol Love Lauryn Hill though so that made up for it!

I saw Frankie in concert in LaCrosse Wi back in the 70s and he will always have a special place in my heart. No one does it like Frankie. 😉

I love covers, especially when it’s done by my favorite YouTubers. I’m in love with Postmodern Jukebox lately.

  23. Toni says:

I love seeing other people do covers of songs. My favorite is when Jimmy fallon does part of a song with a guest…like making rap songs into opera LOL

  24. Rosey says:

I like Lauryn Hill’s remake (when she was with the Fugees) of Killing me Softly. I thought she nailed it, and it was better than the original to me. I also like the Fugees’ remake of No Woman, No Cry, but not as much as the original. 😉

  25. Triplezmom says:

I tend to be an original artist snob too, but I have to admit that I like the Tiffany version of ‘I think we’re alone now’ much better than the original Shondells version.

  26. Annie says:

Oh the memories associated with Friday & Baby Got Back, haha! Thanks for sharing 😛

  27. One of my favorite covers is “Boys Don’t Cry” by Oleander, it’s a cover of a Cure song. http://youtu.be/kBX0F-xvdwo

Your turn! Tell it to Rah-shay!
