Wait? What?
Yup! There is a day called “National Underwear Day.” It was created by a company called Freshpair on August 5th, 2003 in an effort to publicly shine light on “unmentionables.”
Here are picture books to celebrate national underwear day.
The Underpants Zoo by Brian Sendelbach.
This unusual zoo features animals wearing all types of underpants.
Tip: We pretended to be zoo animals wearing underwear as we stomped around the room.
Dinosaurs Love Underpants by Claire Freedman
Learn the true story of how dinosaurs went extinct.
Tip: Practice the name of the dinosaurs BEFORE you try to read this aloud.
Pirates Love Underpants by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort
Pirates love booty, especially when it’s golden underwear!
Tip: If you have access to scarves, use them to create a pirate look with your young readers.
Underwear by Mary Elise Monsell
Zachary Zebra loves underwear. So does his friends…except Bismark the Buffalo. Can Zachary and his friends convince Bismark that wearing underwear is fun?
Tip: Create your own fun underwear using crayons and this template from Printable Coloring Pages.
Veggies with Wedgies by Todd H. Doodler
The veggies are very interested in what Farmer John is hanging on the line. But…WHERE does underwear belong? On your head? On your arm? Get comfy finding ways to wear YOUR underwear!
Tip: Use a stuffed animal to act out all of the places one can wear underwear.
Bonus!
We cannot celebrate National Underwear Day without Joe Consigliore’s Silly Joe Sings!
He sings the “Underwear Song” and you must grab a pair to wear on your head! Of course, I had to play too!
Enjoy National Underwear Day!

I love the title Veggies with Wedgies! LOL
Delighted to see how “well-covered” your library collection has this, allowing us to really get “behind” this “under-” appreciated celebration. 😉 Seriously though, I never realized there were so many children’s books on underwear!
