Make a PomPom Snowman

December 3, 2017

The weather outside in Philly does not feel like winter (yes, yes…technically it’s still Fall/Autumn but December so hush) however, I am in no hurry for snow. Snowfalls in the City of Brotherly Love are tricky and honestly with all that needs to be done for the holidays, I am enjoying weather where I am not bogged down with heavy coats while shopping.

While I may be all bah-humbug about the snow, my library little are all excited about the prospect of a snowy day. While working on upcoming themes for storytime I thought about how we could craft a snowman without the same ole some ole involving cotton balls.

The PomPom Snow man was born!

To create the snowman I used

  • Loops & Threads Charisma Yarn – White – 3.5 oz – One Ball
  • the Clover Pom Pom Makers that The Bee got me for my birthday
  • a hot glue gun
  • buttons (these were from my stash)
  • a yarn needle
  • wooden stick to hold the snowman together.

Create the body of the snowman using three different sizes of the pom-pom maker. I went with medium, large and jumbo.

Assembly was tricky…The snowman looked great laying out on the floor but once I tried to put it together, the snowman was quite wobbly.

I tried to thread some yarn through the pompoms but it was not sturdy enough so I stuck a wooden skewer through the snowman to keep it straight. A couple of squirts of hot glue also helped keep the pieces in place.

Using buttons from my stash, I added a “nose” and the buttons across the “torso.” I tied a ribbon around the neck and a snowman was born.

Reflections:

I liked using the Charisma Loops and Threads for the pompoms. They came out fluffy and full but because the yarn is so soft, it was difficult forming the snowman.

If you have questions for how to use the Clover Pom-pom maker, check out this tutorial from Knit Picks. If you don’t have a Pom-pom maker, you can make your own from cardboard using these instructions from The Craft Train.
