March is almost here and that means it’s almost that time of the year…Read Across America which is a celebration of Dr. Seuss.
You all know how I feel about Dr. Seuss (click here to learn how to Seuss when you don’t want to Seuss) but this year I decided to meet my Dr. Seuss loathing head on instead of complaining about him to anyone within earshot.
I checked out my Pinterest board and found a few pins that I pinned but never attempted. This idea from Future Librarian Superhero was one of my favorites and I combined it with templates from RedKid to create an interactive scavenger hunt.
I selected ten characters that I recognized and paired them with activities that can be easily done in the library.
- Characters are:
- The Cat in the Hat: He welcomes players into the room
- From Horton Hears a Who!, Horton the Elephant: Who ask for a silly word
- From Green Eggs and Ham (I Can Read It All by Myself), Sam I Am: Share your favorite rhymes
- From Dr. Seuss’s Sleep Book (Classic Seuss): Players are asked to yawn
- From How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Classic Seuss), The Grinch: Make a Grinch face
- From The Foot Book: Dr. Seuss’s Wacky Book of Opposites: Stamp your feet
- From Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? (Bright & Early Books), Mr. Brown: Players should “moo”
- From “There’s a Wocket in My Pocket”: Players are asked to describe what’s in their pockets
- The Lorax (Classic Seuss) : Players are asked to do Tree Pose
- From “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish“: Share your favorite color
The characters were printed using a color printer and mounted on red construction paper. The images were distributed around the room and players can have a ball.
Putting together this activity took about 45 minutes from start to finish. Books were displayed to encourage check out.
Notes:
The template for printing the characters only allows about 19 characters per line.
This project is not very expensive to recreate. The materials needed are
Tape
Construction paper
Glue Stick
Scissors
Hopefully this will encourage movement and exploration of the Family Room. For this game I did not make the characters impossible to find; you could adapt the game as you’d like.
