Back in the Kitchen Cookbook Review and Recipe Experiment

December 28, 2016

In which making food in your kitchen is not just warming something in the microwave.

Preface: BlogHer Food is totally the gift that keeps on giving. When I was selected as a volunteer for the FOOD conference I initially thought that I was just going to wrangle mics, maybe help at registration and probably eat a few things while walking through the convention hall. Even some of the attendees asked me why a non-food blogger was attending this conference. Instead of feeling like a fish out of water, I listened while at the sessions I helped with, chatted up some of the fellow bloggers, and decided that like Remy from Ratatouille, I would channel Auguste Gusteau’s famous quote, “Anyone Can Cook.”

My first dabble with cooking that I want to share with you was inspired by Freddie Prinze Jr’s first cookbook, Back to the Kitchen. Freddie was a keynote at BlogHer Food 16. And yes,  THAT Freddie Prinze Jr, he of “She’s All That, Fred from Scooby Doo and (my favorite) Bob Smoot from Head Over Heels”  among others Freddie Prinze Jr. No stranger to the kitchen, when When Freddie headed to California to try his hand at acting, he also enrolled in cooking school, in case that acting thing didn’t work out. Freddie was no stranger to the kitchen, having been encouraged by his mom to explore the world through food.

The recipes in the book are things that are simple but delicious. Meals that my family will actually eat and enjoy. Cooking is possible and not some curious mystery that is not available. It was actually fun working up the recipe and creating a meal that was devoured.

The Bee has been asking for tomato soup ever since we volunteered with the 6ABC Thanksgiving parade. A hot bowl of soup was the norm after being out in the cold on the parade route but this year it was absent from the meal. We have tried local places for soup but as we were going through our recipes Freddie’s popped up. Since The Bee has a dairy allergy I wanted to make sure that she could have a tomato soup that is as rich and creamy but NOT from a can. I found the recipe Freddie calls Mom’s “The Best” Tomato Soup and gave that a try.

Mom’s “The Best” Tomato Soup recipe is as promised; creamy and filling and perfect with a grilled cheese. This recipe was created and crafted and devoured in under two hours with requests to make it often. U keep mentioning the simplicity of the recipe and this is really because the it makes trying a new meal enjoyable. All recipes in this book seem possible and accessible and can be created with ingredients I have in my home or can easily find in my local market.

I love that the recipes are accompanied by anecdotes from Freddie’s cooking while making a movie, stories about his family and how he shares his love of cooking with his daughter. It’s a great book to read and a wonferful addition to your collection.
